More awards nominations

For the second year in a row Paulini has been nominated in two categories for the Urban Music Awards. This year she is again up against her buddy Guy for the best RnB Album Award and she’s running against her ITT colleaugue, Jade McRae in the Best Female Artist category.

Voting closes July 6 and the awards night is August 14. Let’s hope she not only wins something this time but also no-one turns up and yells at her in the street after the Awards ceremony!!

Here’s the boring story from Sony’s website, but all the details are in it:

Paulini is up for two awards including Best Female Artist and Best R&B Album for ‘Superwoman’ at the 2007 rhino’s Urban Music Awards.

Back for its second year, the rhino’s Urban Music Awards (UMA) is a celebration of Urban Music and its huge influence within Australia and New Zealand, and this year it will be held on August 14 at Sydney’s Luna Park.

Vote for Paulini now until voting lines close on July 6 and you could win awesome prizes including VIP tix, limos, flights, accommodation and more!

Searchin for success

It seems the buying public may have been over-saturated with the Young Divas concept if the sales figures for their latest single Searchin are anything to go by.

Despite having a decent video for a change and being arguably the best single they have released so far, both in terms of vocal quality, melody, arrangement and overall feel Searchin only debuted at number 40 in the ARIA charts and has slipped down since then.

So what happened? Was the single a bad choice? Are people not buying it because they already have the track on their album? Or have the fickle public tired of the Young Divas and moved on to the next shiny thing – leaving the Divas behind.

As gorgeous as the girls are, the Young Divas concept itself is really just a gimmick created to boost the coffers of recording companies and it’s no surprise to discover the gloss has worn off for the general public. That’s the nature of gimmicks and we all knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. I just hope the tarnish doesn’t stick to them as individual artists!!!

There has been a reported statement from Paulini that a new Young Divas album is planned but this comes amongst a frenzy of rumours being thrown around by the media involving ego-spats between kate and Ricki, a silly report that the other girls had “kicked Ricki Lee out of the Divas” and other such standard media fodder coming from that well-known entity “a close source” or “someone close to the Divas” (ie no-one at all or a vicious jealous ex-boyfriend etc). Things are a little confusing to say the least.

It’s well known by you lot that personally, I am looking forward to the demise of the Young Divas concept so that the girls (but especially Paulini) have at least a slim chance of getting their careers back on track as credible solo artists instead of just being ‘a girl-group gimmick’. They are all talented and deserve to be treated seriously.

But what do you think? Is this the beginning of the end for our divas? Would that be a good or bad thing for Paulini? Is another Young Divas album worth doing? And why did Searchin do so badly?

Big Gay Hearts

Last year it was Rogue Traders and Marcia Hines, this year Leo Sayer, Sneaky Sound System and our very own Paulini headline the Big Gay Day event in Brisbane (I know which one I'd rather be at!!).

The Big Gay Day is a street party held at the Wickham Hotel and goes for 12 hours starting at 12 pm. Several DJs, bands and other artists perform throughout the day attracting around 6,000 people to the festivities. Proceeds of the event go to various charities, including the Open Doors Charities.

See the forum for more information on the Big Gay Day

PS Dont forget Paulini will also be performing with the girls (Lavina, Kate and Emily) at the 2007 Mardi Gras party at Sydney's Royal Hall Of Industries along with international DJs such as The Freemasons. Tickets at Ticketek.

Basketball fan

Paulini is a HUGE fan of basketball so it must have been a real treat for her to perform at a recent Sydney King's Basketball match in Sydney.

{mosimage}Paulini performed the opening national anthem as well as providing the half-time entertainment. Accompanied by the dancing of the Sydney King's Cheerleaders, Paulini boogied and grooved her way through her Urban Chart hit So Over You while the basketball crowd looked on. Because it was a track performance there's no band or background singers to accompany her, which makes the song sound a little odd, but Paulini did a brilliant job anyway, as always.

{mosimage}

A fan captured the performance on their mobile phone and posted it at YouTube. Unfortunately, the audio is a little rough and the only bit of the vid that worked had someone walking across the front of the camera so you really only get to see a still shot of the girls and Paulini in mid-groove (more or less like the pic above only further away and blurry LOL). But at least you get an idea of the audio and it's great that someone posted it there for us all!!

Questions over Young Divas

A few days ago I received an email about the Young Divas. The sender was a bog-standard yahoo email address and id so there was no way I could verify the information I was sent. But I thought it would be interesting to throw it out there for people to read, not because I'm taking it as factual – (which it may or may not be) but because it raises some interesting debate.

Young Divas promo shotThe email alleges that the contract set up for all of the girls in the Young Divas gives them no rights of any consequence. It alleges that they are NOT the owners of the name "Young Divas" (Sony/BMG own it) and are not contractually linked to it.

The email also states that the Young Divas group can exist with or without the current members. In fact, they could dump all of them from the group and insert any random good-looking chicky-babes with decent voices (or not!) to replace any or all of them at any time.

And finally, due to the natural conflict between Ricki Lee's recording company and Sony/BMG when it comes to rights over original material, the Young Divas can not release original material while Ricki Lee is involved in the group. This was something stipulated in the contract between Sony/BMG and Shock Records (Ricki Lees company) – apparently.

This means that they will not release original material and will continue to degrade their individual credibility by releasing nothing but covers. The author of the email alleged the Young Divas would NEVER release original material, but I'm not sure that would make sense if, in the future, the make-up of the group came exclusively from the Sony/BMG stable.

Anyway, I dont know if this is all true (AND I EMPHASISE THIS SITE IS NOT STATING ANY OF THIS IS TRUE) but if it was then in my opinion it would be an appalling situation for Paulini. It would be a contractual obligation that takes full advantage of Paulini and gives her very little in return, in fact it may be to her detriment. So I hope it's just an unfounded rumour.

It would be fantastic if someone from Sony/BMG would respond and either confirm or deny – or even clarify this information (come on, we know you're reading this ;) )

It has been a bit of a revelation to see how easily they just slotted yet another Idol contestant, Lavina Williams, in to the group to take Ricki Lee's place for a couple of months. It's as if the management believe there is no difference between one female singer and another. That the girls are interchangeable with any other Idol contestant and have no individual value or uniqueness. To me the Young Divas without Ricki Lee (or any of the current members) are NOT the Young Divas (no disrespect to Lavina).

In any case, the email and it's allegations came as no real surprise to me as I have never been confident that the Young Divas concept is in any way working in favour of Paulini's solo career. I keep getting reassurances that it is, but as yet I havent seen any evidence of it. Her official website is still dead and outdated and there has been nothing happening in her solo career in months. As far as I can tell, the only member of the group who is clearly still working on her solo career is Ricki Lee, who is the only one NOT with Sony/BMG. Kudos to her company – Shock Records – for this obvious commitment to her as an artist!

Sadly, the above information would make sense of a lot of the goings on with the Divas lately.

I sound like a broken record I know, but OH HOW I WISH Paulini had signed with an independent label….

What are your thoughts?

Post them here

PS Thanks to Justina for supplying the recent official promo pic of the Young Divas.

Stylists Take Note

Great news for Paulini in the recent PopRepublic poll for the Fashion Icon of 2006.

Ah the magic of irony! The joy of shoving it in the faces of those who believe they are the WORD in style and fashion.

Paulini has placed second in the Pop Republic's "It list" public survey asking Australian's to vote for who they thought was the fashion icon of 2006.

Yep, that's right, Australia voted her into SECOND position!! Out of all the people in the entire universe, well world at least, Paulini has rocked into the list at an awesome second place. She is behind only Mischa Barton (American star of OC and girl-buddy to Nicole Ritchie) and ahead of Australia's own Jennifer Hawkins. And this despite not fitting ANY of the stereotypes of what a hot young chicky babe is supposed to look like (eg no blonde hair/blue-eyes/skeletal body etc).

Some of you may remember last year some obscure fashion guru getting stuck into Paulini for supposedly not dressing fashionably enough. We gave them their very own feature story (read: "roasting") right here on Paulini Online – even tho no-one had ever heard of the "stylist" prior to her suddenly pronouncing judgement on Paulini.

Well perhaps our mis-guided "stylist" needs to go back to "stylist school" and take a refresher course :)

Of course, Paulini getting second place in the fashion stakes comes as no surprise to any of us. The only thing we might be surprised about is why she didnt get the top gong!

PS I have noticed the "sour-grapes" comments being made about Paulini's success with this nomination in some of the Young Divas fan forums and all I can say is – seriously kiddies, grow up.

Carols at Canley Heights

If you've been missing seeing our Divine Missy performing solo on television at Christmas Carols – well miss no more!

The fabulous Traxlmaz has posted two videos of Paulini performing at the Christmas Carols event in Canley Heights. She sings Joy to The World and Rough Day.I've posted the links in the forum.

Also Paulini singing Operator

This is an oldie but a goodie!

Someone posted in the forum asking about any recordings of Paulini performing her spectacular version of the Gospel classic Operator way back in 2003 at the Channel Seven Christmas Carols. Sadly, I've lost my copy of the video but I have posted the audio of her performance in the Downloads section of the site (accessible via your user menu when you're logged in).

Please right-click the mp3 and save it rather than playing it directly off the site!

Also note that due to our move to a new host the other downloads are temporarily unavialable but they will back in there soon!

Enjoy!

Webhosting blues

You know what I REALLY hate. It's when a con-artist sucks people in by pretending to offer a service for free and then suddenly tells you they want you to start paying for it or lose it.

I'm talking about the people who host this website, Jumba.com.au. Just a few short months ago I moved this site to their hosting service because they were Australian, they said they supported non-profit websites and they had a basic service at no cost.

I was planning to upgrade to one of their paid plans when I could afford it and had been busily recommending their paid hosting to anyone who asked. But yesterday I received an email telling me I had two weeks to start paying for the hosting or leave. I was flabbergasted.

This is the oldest con trick in the book and reflects badly upon their business ethics and general trustworthiness.

So, unfortunately, this means I will once again have to find another hosting service and rebuild the entire site somewhere else. NOTE that this does NOT mean the websites internet address will change. I bought the address at www.paulini.info and that moves with the site. So it will ALWAYS be www.paulini.info.

It does mean that I have to now search for a good free or cheap hosting service and then move the site yet again. That means there will be some disruption to the website but hopefully I can keep it to a minimum. I apologise in advance for this – it will probably happen in the next week or so. The process of moving the site can take days behind the scenes but should only effect what you see for a day at the most, hopefully just an hour or so.

If anyone can recommend a GENUINE webhosting service that's free or reasonably priced please let me know. If anyone can help out with costs that would be great too.

Meanwhile, if you're one of the people I recommended to use www.jumba.com.au for your professional hosting needs – I unreservedly withdraw that recommendation. Run a mile from them and go elsewhere. Sadly, I still find that hosting services located in the United States are far better business people and value for money than those in Australia but if I can find a decent Aussie hosting service I would be thrilled.

Please post any ideas you have in the forum in the  Webhosting Ideas thread.

Paulini Online

NEWSFLASH – PAULINI WILL BE ONLINE TO ASK QUESTIONS TODAY – at NOON!

Well finally, someone has convinced Paulini to come on line and talk to her fans – albeit only very briefly.

Paulini isn't good with the internet so she needs a bit of support and if she has a good enough time maybe she'll do this more often!!

You can ask her some questions today when she will be online somewhere between 12 pm and 1 pm at the Young Divas News Forum HERE .

I cant make it as I have an appointment so I hope some of you guys can get there – say hi from me if you do :)

If you can't make it either it looks like you can leave a question for her in the news forum anyway.
