You can read Hayden's on-the-spot report of the second epsiode of It Takes Two HERE

Don't forget, if you missed their performances (or just want to relive them – and who wouldnt!!?) you can download them from THIS SITE courtesy of the mysterious "vindiezel"!!

And in other news: This Time I Know It's For Real is number one this week on the "other chart" (ie the Brazin group of retailers who pulled out of the ARIA database)  – although it only made number 2 on the crippled ARIA chart. So another number 1 song for our Miss P – pity about the ARIA/Brazin dispute which has probably kept the Divas from the number 1 spot on both charts.

And CONGRATULATIONS TO PAULINI for her nomination for Best Female Artist in the Australian and New Zealand Urban Music Awards. There were a lot of contenders for the nominations and Paulini was one of 4 female artists eventaully chosen by ordinary voters like YOU. The winners will be announced at the Awards Night in July. More information to come.{moscomment}

UPDATE:

TOTALLY ROCKED DA HOUSE!!

I can't wait to get the news on what this was like live because we all saw it on the television and it was AWESOME!

You can watch it again at You Tube as a streaming video (thanks to vindiezel again). You can also download it for yourself here . If ANYONE has a video of it that includes the judging sequence and/or other takes of Paulini and Simon during the show I would kill to get hold of it.

And yes guys – we saw you AND heard you in the audience!!! Yay!! Money mouth

—————————————————————————

Some of our very own bestest favourite regular members have been lucky enough to score tickets to tonight's live broadcast of It Takes Two (6.30, channel 7 – you know the drill) in Melbourne.

Anomecron, Hayden (aka naggindragon), Kel and Luke are all heading off together to see the Divine Miss P do her stuff live and up close so keep a look out for them on your screen tonight. I wish I was there to see them all meeting nommie for the first time! Laughing

So how will you know them if you see them on tv??? Well first off, whoever's making the biggest noise and carry-on when Paulini is up is likely to be them. But secondly, if they can bring them in, our guys & gal have made some bewdifull posters to wave in the air. Here's a sneak look at them (the posters that is, not Nommie & Kel etc) so you'll know what to watch out for.

{mosimage}

{mosimage}

Good to see they're all using the traditional, time-honored war-cry of the die-hard Paulini fan (so familiar to anyone who's ever heard "that woman" yelling out on any mp3 of Paulini singing during the Idol contest) – yes I'm talking about "GO PAULINI".

We're expecting a full report and lotsa photos guys!!!

Don't  forget to vote for Simon and Paulini before the show starts tonight or we might not see her again on ITT… and that would make me sad. Cry

PS   Big hugs and sympathy to Talia who couldnt go with them coz she's sick. Awwwww. Hope you feel better soon honey!

It Takes Two

Excellent performance last night of Fly Me To The Moon by Paulini and her partner Simon – he's not a bad singer at all. I think their scores were a bit low but that's what happens when you go first – the judge's have nothing to use as a bench mark – except you! Well done guys!

 For those who missed it or live overseas – watch her sing with Simon HERE! (thanks to vindiezel) You will need to register an account there to see all of it.

It Takes Two

UPDATE: Paulini will be on Channel 7′s Sunrise show, Wednesday morning (17 May) performing live at the Thank You event in Beaconsfield, Tasmania.

{mosimage}It Takes Two

There’s a lot of buzz in the media about Paulini starring in a new television show on Channel 7 called It Takes Two which features professional singers teaching other ordinary celebs how to sing.

 The new show was announced during the finale of Dancing With the Stars when Paulini performed This Time I Know It’s For Real with the Young Divas. Darryl Sommers briefly spoke to Paulini and asked her about the new show’s name. Paulini replied "It’s called Just the Two of Us" and had to be corrected by Darryl. While this seemed like a total "blonde moment" for Paulini, it makes more sense when you know that the show is actually modelled on a British show called Just the Two of Us and was originally going to use the same title.

{mosimage}

Paulini will be pairing up with cricketer Michael Bevan who met her for the first time at the DWTS final show. Other celebs are yet to be announced but it is confirmed that Guy Sebastian will also be coaching someone and the show will feature a range of musical styles including pop, RnB and country. Rumour is that Grant "the weatherman" Denyer will host the show.

Should be an interesting exercise. But when it’s all over, I’d like to see a show about Michael teaching Paulini to play cricket.

The never-ending story of the Gold Dress

.::Solid Gold::.

That Infamous Gold Dress

One of the most talked-about moments from the first Australian Idol competition involved Paulini and a gold dress she wore during one of her performances. Even now, months after the end of the show, the incident just wont die.

For some of Paulini’s fans the incident is too trivial and silly to discuss, but others consider it a great moment for Paulini who showed extreme professionalism and grace in the face of comments about her body image on national prime time television. Most people know that, in the scheme of things, this incident really doesnt matter to Paulini’s success as an artist. Only her voice and her talent will.

But like it or not, that moment in Australian television is permanently etched in millions of people’s hearts and minds. It has become the stuff of reality-tv legends in Australia and still provokes strong reactions in some people.

Now it seems the whole story is reaching across to the US as people from there have been enquiring about what happened. So for all of those people who didnt see it – for whatever reasons – here’s the official fanlisting webperson’s take on the event.

The Gold dress performance

Paulini wore a designer gold dress for one of her performances in the competition. She sang “Survivor” beautifully and did her usual brilliant performance. At the end of her song, one of the judges – Mark Holden – stared at her for a long moment and then said “Paulini what’s with what you’re wearing girl?”.

Another judge, Marcia, said [to Mark] “The point should be, what is with what YOU’RE wearing?”

Mark then said to Paulini: “You never fail to sing brilliantly but whoever convinced you to wear that I wouldn’t listen to ‘em again!” Paulini just laughed and replied “Thank You”.

The camera moved to Marcia for her comments. She said to Paulini: “Now to get back to the matter at hand… you’re slammin’. You sang the song!”

And then it was Ian “Dicko” Dickson’s turn, but Mark called across to him before he could speak: “Come on Dicko, tell the truth bruthaman”

Dicko spoke to Paulini: “Paulini… I have to say I thought that was a little bit breathless and horrid that performance, [followed by a resounding "BOOOOO!!!" from the audience] and also, this is really hard for me to say, but it’s the real world. You should choose more appropriate clothes or shed some pounds” (there were resounding sounds of shock and horror from the audience)

While the audience were clearly shocked and disgusted, Paulini just shrugged, commenting with a laugh on how much the dress was worth and who had designed it.

The next day, the media went crazy with the story and controversy flew across all layers of the community. Everyone with even a tiny interest got involved, Doctors. lawyers, women’s rights groups, child advocates! You name it. All of them getting stuck into Dicko for “promoting negative body images and attitudes” in young girls. They all ignored the fact that Mark started it (no-one pays him much attention) and focussed on Dicko. They also didnt take the time to look at what Dicko actually said, in my humble opinion. Very few bothered to point out that Paulini is a slim though curvaceous girl who actually wears an Australian size 12. In other words, while they were all going on about how bad it was to make a comment like that to an overweight girl, they didnt look close enough to realise she wasnt overweight at all. A small minority of commentators took the time to comment that Paulini had performed so incredibly well.

{mosimage}
Here’s Paulini wearing the dress at the moment when Dicko and Mark were having a go at her in the show. Personally, I think the dress is pretty ugly, but that’s just my taste. Paulini, however looks just fine to me. But that girl would look good in anything!

My personal opinion is that Dicko was very clumsily trying to help
her. I dont think he meant to say she was too fat, I just think he
wanted to say the dress would only suit someone who was a skeleton. I just dont think he liked the dress. But thats my interpretation.
Others think he was saying she was fat. Either way – he shouldnt have
said it the way he did. The truly negative impact of this is that Paulini’s reality-tv fan detractors were finally able to find something to insult Paulini with – her supposed “weight issues” while wailing and weeping about “sympathy votes” (a time-honored tradition amongst supporters of less-talented contestants in Idol shows). The positive is that Paulini was able to take what she needed from the whole thing and move on. She continues to delight audiences all over Australasia with no sign of having had that incredible confidence and poise of hers undermined.

The aftermath

Dicko apologised on the next episode of the show and Paulini was cool about it saying that she is perfectly okay with her body image so it wasnt a big deal for her.

Meanwhile, Paulini was careful to point out to people that she loves Dicko and has the utmost respect for him. Dicko, for his part, has been willing to humiliate himself mercilessly in order to send up the whole gold dress gaffe. At the end of 2003 he was photographed for a National magazine wearing the dress, shoes and all. Paulini and Dicko also included it in the Australian Idol concert as a humourous sketch in which Dicko is “revealed” to be wearing the gold dress under his suit.

Recent stupidity

This would all have died down and the respect for Dicko would have remained had it not been for more recent comments by Dicko which indicate he is obsessed with the whole gold dress incident beyond the point of decency. Dicko was interviewed outside the Australian Television Industry awards night recently where he commented on how he had “considered wearing Paulini’s gold dress but thought better of it”. Hmmmmm. Okay, that was a bit unnecessary, but not too bad.

Unfortunately, Dicko then appeared on The Footy Show a few days later along with the winner of the Australian Idol contest, Guy Sebastian. On seeing a member of the show who is clearly overweight, Dicko thought he was being funny when he said “Hello Paulini!”.

Now that takes the issue to a whole new level, being a clear insult against Paulini (who wasnt even involved) and an obvious, though cruel and inaccurate, statement about Paulini’s weight. Sebastian laughed while others looked uncomfortable. The question I have is, why didnt this comment, on a national television show with a large audience of mostly males, recieve the same media attention and condemnation from the community?

I, for one, think that this behaviour from Dicko should be condemned and Dicko should be told to pull his fat head in. He certainly lost a lot of respect from me and many other fans of the show with this behaviour. As for Guy Sebastian, his laughter in the face of this comment is a concern.

That’s about all I have to say on the Gold Dress brouhaha – I’m more interested in the actual talent and skills Paulini showed when she was performing in that dress! The incident is worth remembering for the young Paulini’s ability to cope under pressure, but other than that, its a mere blip on the screen of Paulini’s career.

29/6/04 update: The above article has now been updated with an accurate account of what occurred during the “gold-dress fiasco”. Thanks to “naggindragon” for filling in the details for this article. Also, in recent days the continuing influence of this event has once again been shown. In the fansites of a certain other female contestant, for example, people are acknowledging that Paulini actually is very beautiful. This has come about due to her obvious beauty shining through on her CD cover, in her video and in Sony publicity shots. But interestingly, they still like drag things back to their moment of glory and carry on about her imaginary weight problem saying things like how she seems to have “lost weight” or “done work on herself”. Once again, her detractors focus on Dicko/Marks stupid comment as a subtle way of putting Paulini down. Except its all so tragic because they are clearly aware that Paulini is downright gorgeous and their insulting comments during the competition, about her weight and her looks, appear pretty lame now don’t they!

Fiji Village recap of Paulini’s final night

Paulini bows out

After a very controversial two weeks Australians were once again called to vote for their favorite idol.

A recap of Sunday?s, October 26, 2003 performance saw the remaining four idols perform with a live, swinging? big band. That certainly put a different perspective to their performance.

Looking very elegant and sexy, Paulini Curuenavuli, came out in a long black dress. She wore beautiful silver jewelry and a $700 pair of black and silver shoes. She sang a number by Etta James, who was quiet a sassy performer in her time, called ?At Last?.

As always Paulini made Etta?s song her own. She had the audience and judges alike mesmerised as her voice swooned across the room.

Marcia Hines comments, to Paulini, after she sang referred to previous ones that were made a couple of weeks ago by a fellow judge: ?Don?t get angry ? get even.? That?s exactly what our Paulini did. Ian Dickson stated that if Paulini wanted to wear a tight fitting dress she had to lose weight.

This time his comments weren?t so harsh, quite the opposite, telling her how beautiful and ravishing she looked, and her performance was just ?sublime?.

For her second song, Paulini chose, ?Almost like being in Love? a song made famous some years ago by Nat King Cole. The judges could not be heard after her performance as the crown went crazy, screaming, and cheering. She was absolutely fantastic.

Despite her tremendous performances over the past few months, Paulini was voted-off the show. Nominated with 21-year-old, Guy Sebastian, from Adelaide, she scored the least amount of votes to keep her in the competition. Guy moves on to next week along with country boy, Shannon Knoll and Cosima De Vito. They make the final three.

She was as gracious in defeat, as she was throughout the contest. Her final song, ?At Last? , was certainly something to remember – there were a few teary eyes in the audience.

We should all be very proud of Paulini?s performance, and for making it to the final four. Some 10,000 contestants from five cities took part in this competition. Paulini made it to the final 40. Then down to the final four. Now that certainly says a lot for Fiji?s OWN IDOL.

Idol Casualty

Idol casualty

October 28, 2003

Paulini Curuenavuli has been voted off Australian Idol.

Popular singer Paulini Curuenavuli was a shock casualty on Australian Idol last night.

The Fijian-born singer, who was at the centre of controversy last week when advised by one of the judges to “shed some pounds”, was voted out of the television talent quest, leaving three contestants – Shannon Noll, Cosima De Vito and Guy Sebastian.
{mosimage}

Curuenavuli, 20, was told by judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson last week that she should choose “more appropriate clothes or shed some pounds” after she had appeared on the show wearing a tight, clinging, gold outfit.

Viewers responded with a wave of outrage and it was a more diplomatic Dickson on display last night, tipping Sydney-based Curuenavuli for success, based on not just her vocal talents but her “inner beauty”.

“Your beautiful voice will carry you far but I think it’s your inner beauty that is going to take you further,” he said.

Dont feel sorry for Paulini

This is an article with a difference. Whether you liked the clothes Paulini chose to wear in Idol or not, there are some interesting points made here.

Let?s get this straight: contestants on a show designed to choose winners and make them into pop stars, so they can be rich, famous, and idol-ised, should be treated with sensitivity about their looks?

All the well-meaning psychologists and former stars who have pitched in and attacked Australian Idol judges Dickson and Holden over their comments about Paulini?s dress need to get real. They were right about the dress – it looked hideous, and they were right to be blunt and point it out.

Idol is one of the shallowest shows on TV, because it is designed to pick budding members of the shallowest part of the entertainment industry- pop stars. It is only one removed from Model Search, and it certainly isn?t about fostering idealism, a positive image, or any other sentimental stuff.

Being a pop star is about generating money for record companies, and for yourself. Top stars like Kylie are constantly in the news, have their butt measurements analysed, and their love life trashed. In exchange, though other people write songs for her she makes tens of millions of dollars, gets A-List invites and dates male models and film stars.

That is what pop music is about. It is the complete opposite to original music; written by the musicians themselves and played live before cranky beer-swilling audiences in a hard, brutal arena of natural selection (corner pubs!) where almost nobody ever gets paid.

Great Aussie original acts, such as INXS, AC/DC, Regurgitator or The Waifs, would never have made it past first base as Australian Idols. Then again, they probably wouldn?t have signed up for the show in the first place.

There is a huge gulf in the music industry (and that is what it is, an industry) between those who still write their own music and those who proffer themselves as pawns to be made up as stars. The latter as I?ve suggested already are little more than models, to be shaped and moulded into manufactured money-generating machines.

Original musicians, on the other hand, do the lot. They have to come up with a ?sound?, write their own music, polish their performance through hundreds of tough gigs and self-promote as the ultimate guerrilla marketers.

The trade-off is that strict conformity with a single ?ideal? image is not so important. Sure, looks certainly count, but there are plenty of ?voluptuous?, badly dressed or otherwise non-conforming types who have made it regardless, through genuine talent and originality. And most of them probably wouldn?t have cut the mustard as pure pop stars. Imagine trying to package up and sell Peter Garrett, Courtney Love or the Queens of the Stone Age as tweenie idols!

If people are against shallowness and poor role-modelling for young people, then they should rally against the pop industry as a whole. Making Australian Idol all sensitive and PC won?t alter the fact that Kylie works out every day to keep her bum as round and hard as a pair of rockmelons, just as it won?t suddenly introduce a whole bunch of male pop stars with more hair on their backs than their heads.

And as for Paulini, she has two options. If she wants to be a pop star, sold as a commodity to the base end of the market, wrapped up in a manufactured image and someone else?s sound, then she needs to learn to dress herself.

Or she can team up with some muso?s and start a band, write some music, pick an image she is comfortable with, and maybe, just maybe, she will succeed as a true artist. And if she does, she will make herself and the industry suits some money, but she may also give something of value back to music as a whole.

Idol Show notes – Sydney Confidential

Notes from Superpopstars.com October edition, written during the Idol show.

The last article is written by Lauren – and its a sweet review of the five performances.

News and Articles 2

Idol star has a ball

JUST a few months ago Australian Idol contestant Paulini planned on celebrating her 21st birthday over a humble dinner with family.

Paulini celebrates with her fellow Idols. But her sudden rise to fame last night ensured her a celebration of rock star proportions.

Following a day of rehearsals, the Fijian-born finalist went back to the Idol HQ for a mocktail party (she doesn’t drink alcohol) where the show’s remaining hopefuls showered her with gifts and birthday wishes.

But it was Paulini’s biggest fans who pulled out all stops to ensure she celebrated in celebrity style – the Fijian Rugby Union team. The boys have been following Paulini’s success since arriving in Sydney for Rugby World Cup and yesterday sent her a video message filmed on their tour bus.

Confidential and the Inside Idol team was there when the Bankstown girl received the message – that she was a national hero in Fiji and had become the team mascot.

After the party Paulini grabbed her signed team jersey and celebrated her 21st with her family and fellow finalists Millsy, Cosima, Shannon and Guy at a nearby restaurant.

The surprises continued afterwards at Idol HQ where Paulini’s Sydney band MIXX had set up to play.

* * *

STILL on Idol, following Monday night’s shock comments by judge Mark Holden to outgoing finalist Levi, Confidential hears angry scenes backstage ensued.

Fellow judge Dicko was said to have slammed Holden, saying he had “really let himself down” before eventually Holden admitted he “felt like crap” about it.

Five strive to stay alive

By Australian Idol star Lauren Buckley in the Daily Telegraph

THE Australian Idol competition has really started to hot up, and the five who are left in it deserve to be there.

Levi gave a great performance with his version of Bobby Brown’s Every Litte Step, and it was sad for him to go.

But Idol is a competition, and four more people will have to go through that emotional experience.

But no matter where they finish, they’ve won because they’ve come this far.

From Sunday’s performances, I thought everyone was good but I think Guy stood out the most – his performance was amazing.

I think all of the competitors are growing as performers each week with experience.

GUY – performed Prince’s When Doves Cry, and showed he’s getting better and better. He’s such a talent, his voice and his personality really shines and people see that when he performs. I think this weekend’s theme of R&B and soul will suit him down to the ground.

COSIMA – performed Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got to do With it and I think she was great. She has a really strong voice and she looks amazing. She really has improved and grown since the competition started, especially from her first audition.

SHANNON – performed Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On a Prayer and showed he’s really good. He’s very talented and what’s good about him is that he has the typical Aussie look and what you see is what you get. He also has a very good, strong rock voice.

PAULINI – performed Aretha Franklin’s Freeway of Love. Every time she opens her mouth, everyone is stunned. She has such an amazing voice. She really makes any song she sings her own.

ROB – performed 1927′s If I Could. He’s heaps talented and I think he wins the audience with his cheekiness. He can work the audience and work the stage and I think that goes down really well for him.

LEVI – performed Bobby Brown’s Every Little Step and I think his performance was good. I think he picked a good song. I like the way he worked the audience and I think he did well, even though he got voted out. It was unfortunate for him to have to leave. His brother, who appeared on stage with him, was feeling really down. They did a marvellous performance.

Judge’s controversy

Mark’s comments:

I think it was unfair of Mark to make the comments he did about Levi. Mark’s not a horrible person – he’s a really nice guy – but he shouldn’t have said it.

Marcia’s comments:

Her comments were directed at the fact a lot of girl viewers are voting for the guys who are left. It’s a competition for singing, but I think it’s a popularity contest.

Fiji’s own Idol

AUSTRALIA

On a recent trip to Fiji, I purchased a copy of the official CD for the 2003 South Pacific Games, “The Pacific at its best!”

The first song on the album, ‘Many Rhythms … One love” is sung by Fiji’s own, Paulini Curuenavuli.

I am very proud to announce that Paulini is a contestant on ‘Australian Idol.’

Australia is currently hosting a major talent quest, simply titled “Australian Idol.”
Over the past few weeks, we have seen scores of contestants eliminated by three prominent judges.

Some have left the stage crying, begging for a second chance. Others have argued in anger at the decision against them, while some simply walk off stage accepting defeat ? meaning that it just wasn?t their time for fame and stardom.

Paulini has made it into the final 40 from hundreds of contestants. Over the next few weeks, performers will be given the chance to show the judges and the Australian public just what it is they can do whilst on stage.

Paulini, 20, came to Australia at the tender age of four, and now resides in Sydney with her family. She performs regularly around town with her band, Mixx.

With the help of the general public placing their votes via telephone and SMS texts, we will see Australia?s first ? Idol?.

Some of the other contestants featured are talents from Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and off course home grown, Down Under.

Paulini is truly a joy to listen to when performing. If you haven’t already heard her and accompanying artists on the SPG CD, what are you waiting for??

It certainly is money worth spent when you hear the tracks of that album. We should all be proud at having such talent in our Pacific Island nation.

I will keep you posted on Paulini?s progress on ?Australian Idol?.
