It seems the buying public may have been over-saturated with the Young Divas concept if the sales figures for their latest single Searchin are anything to go by.
Despite having a decent video for a change and being arguably the best single they have released so far, both in terms of vocal quality, melody, arrangement and overall feel Searchin only debuted at number 40 in the ARIA charts and has slipped down since then.
So what happened? Was the single a bad choice? Are people not buying it because they already have the track on their album? Or have the fickle public tired of the Young Divas and moved on to the next shiny thing – leaving the Divas behind.
As gorgeous as the girls are, the Young Divas concept itself is really just a gimmick created to boost the coffers of recording companies and it’s no surprise to discover the gloss has worn off for the general public. That’s the nature of gimmicks and we all knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. I just hope the tarnish doesn’t stick to them as individual artists!!!
There has been a reported statement from Paulini that a new Young Divas album is planned but this comes amongst a frenzy of rumours being thrown around by the media involving ego-spats between kate and Ricki, a silly report that the other girls had “kicked Ricki Lee out of the Divas” and other such standard media fodder coming from that well-known entity “a close source” or “someone close to the Divas” (ie no-one at all or a vicious jealous ex-boyfriend etc). Things are a little confusing to say the least.
It’s well known by you lot that personally, I am looking forward to the demise of the Young Divas concept so that the girls (but especially Paulini) have at least a slim chance of getting their careers back on track as credible solo artists instead of just being ‘a girl-group gimmick’. They are all talented and deserve to be treated seriously.
But what do you think? Is this the beginning of the end for our divas? Would that be a good or bad thing for Paulini? Is another Young Divas album worth doing? And why did Searchin do so badly?
