Who is Tui Ravai?

Paulini and MIXX are part of a fund-raising show tonight to raise money for the late Tui Ravai’s family. For those who are curious about who Tui Ravai is, this is a letter written to the editor of The National on 3 May 2004 that might tell you a little about him.

Tribute to music duo

ON behalf of PNG’s exclusive Fijian band, the Bula Boys, I take this opportunity in expressing our sincere condolence and heartfelt sympathy on the passing of our brother and musical inspiration, Fiji keyboard sensation Tui Ravai, last Monday.

Tui Ravai joined Jack Clunn (now deceased) of the famous Clockwork Orange band and toured Fiji and Tonga in 1989 during the mini South Pacific Games.

He inspired a lot of PNG musicians during his three-month stint in Port Moresby and he taught Ben David, son of noted guitarist Willie David, how to play guitar the Fijian way.

Fiji and PNG have lost most of their fine musicians and performers in Wise Vatuwaqa, Tim Salaca, Pal Steven, Peter Aisi, Leah Osbourne, Henry Fabila, and Jack Cluun.

The music followers of PNG and the Fijian community take this opportunity to thank Tui Ravai for his dedication and commitment in establishing the platform for Melanesian musicians to follow.
Our sympathy and condolences goes to the families of two of Melanesia’s best in music and song – Tui Ravai and Jack Clunn.

Bula Boys,

Port Moresby
